Description

Lost Cabin Ranch is a 589 acre ranch located just 1.5 miles northwest of Boswell, OK, and 120 miles from Dallas. Surrounded by roads on all four sides, one of which is a paved county road, this ranch takes up almost an entire section. In fact, the current owner has been leasing another 50 acres in the section and he believes it could be purchased along with Lost Cabin Ranch. That only leaves a 1 acre out that isnt currently being used. Wouldnt it be nice to have roads as barriers between your land and all your neighbors? Just from a wildlife management standpoint, it would be a great advantage to have a one-mile square area as a sanctuary.

When you first enter the property, you get a sense of its faded glory. The old homestead is battered but still standing surrounded by giant oak trees. The old cistern is still in the corner of the yard, a garage and storm shelter to the rear. Wander just a little bit in the woods and you will find the front cap of a Model T or an old crosscut saw blade that may have been used to build the two log cabin structures that are clinging to existence. An old windmill peers out from the top of a grown oak tree. An old wagon trail is still visible on the ranch. From the aerial you can see numerous cross fences that once divided the ranch into functional grazing units, each with its own pond to water the livestock. A quick look at the soil map and almost the entire ranch lights up with fertile soil types. You get a real sense that this might have been a showplace farm 50 years ago.

Lost Cabin Ranch could still be saved as a cattle ranch, but some quick intervention will be needed to combat the brush and improve the fences. However, if you are looking for a hunting property with lots of ponds to fish, then very little is needed. Now that the forest has started to reclaim the pastures, you see a beautiful mixture of transitional tree species intermixed with tall prairie grasses. This dynamic yields great woodland/prairie interfaces that deer and turkey flourish in. The wooded areas are full of mature hardwood species, primarily oaks, while the transitional areas are brushing up with persimmons, green briar, honeysuckle and elms. The combination of the two gives the animals an abundance of food sources throughout the year. Alternative patches of timber and open meadows create ideal locations for establishing food plots and protein feeders. Imagine what could be achieved with your management of the property?

Lastly, the old farm house is still serviceable as a hunting cabin and could be used as a landing spot for you, your family and friends until you get the property fixed up exactly like you want it. There are lots of great places to build your new cabin if you decide to leave the old house behind or remove it from the property.

Lost Cabin Ranch is the ideal spot for someone looking for great natural features for wildlife, at a reasonable driving distance from Dallas, with some basic improvements already in place to see you through until you can build your dream cabin and barn. There is a lot of history on Lost Cabin Ranch and it is waiting for the next steward owner to add the next chapter.
